Speaker(s) / Presenter(s):

We know that the U.S. political system and electorate are more polarized now than at any time since the Civil War. This session will highlight the sources and consequences of polarization for the political system and ordinary citizens, and consider how that polarization has played out in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The proposed outside speaker, Marc Hetherington, is the author of several award-winning books on political polarization, including Why Washington Won’t Work (2015) and Authoritarianism and Polarization in America (2009). UK participants will provide further context for the 2016 election, national institutions, and partisan media.
